Compai was born in Florence, Italy in 2002 when California natives (and sisters) Faith and Justina Blakeney opened a boutique. Faith and Justina quickly made a name for themselves as the specialists in the rehabilitation of used and abused clothing. In 2004 they launched their first clothing collection. By 2005 they self-published their first book “99 Ways To Cut, Sew, Trim And Tie Your T-Shirt Into Something Special.” After selling out of the self-published edition (200 copies in just 2 days!), the book was purchased by Potter Craft, a division of Random House, and has since developed into a series. “99 Ways To Cut, Sew And Deck Out Your Denim” came out in 2007, and “99 Ways To Cut, Sew, Tie And Rock Your Scarf” in March 2008. COMPAI designs have been published and exhibited worldwide and have appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, on the pages of publications like Vogue, Glamour, Sportswear International and the San Francisco Chronicle—

F A Q
What does “Compai” mean?
Our company name COMPAI originates from the Spanish word “compay” or “compadre” which means friend.
Why recycled clothing?
Each American , on average, throws away 68 lbs. of textile every year. That’s like buying an entire wardrobe for New Years and throwing it all away at Christmas. This is not a sustainable way of life. Compai aims to change the way that people approach fashion because being stylish does not have to cost us our planet.
Where are you located?
Although Compai started out in Florence, Italy—we moved to Brooklyn, New York in 2007.
